Autistic Self Advocacy Network Australia and New Zealand

Advocacy is an action. It is the supporting of a cause or proposal through actions designed to inform and influence others.

ASAN AUNZ’s systemic advocacy focuses on long-term social change to ensure laws, policies, and practices support the rights and interests of Autistic people. It aims to create positive, lasting changes for our entire community rather than addressing issues on an individual basis. This approach requires strategic planning and resources to effectively reduce and remove systemic barriers.

Self-advocacy involves the actions you can take to let others know your needs, rights, and interests. It involves effectively communicating your thoughts and feelings, negotiating for yourself, and making informed decisions. Self-advocacy can be practiced in most parts of your life, particularly in situations where your needs aren’t being met. Importantly, there are many ways of communicating your views and needs.
