Disability Parking Permits ASAN AUNZ
Position Statement

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network Australia and New Zealand welcomes changes to South Australia’s disability parking permit scheme.

an important step toward a more inclusive society

These changes are an important step toward a more inclusive society, not only for people with hidden disabilities that are now able to use disability parking, but also because they help change societies expectations of what a person with disability
looks like.

“Access to disability parking will give Autistic people the ability to participate in spaces that were previously inaccessible, increasing their opportunities to connect with community. These changes benefit more than Autistic people and other people with disability, they improve the lives of families, friends, supporters and allies. Having diverse people participate in all parts of the community helps create a more inclusive society”

We call for the australian government to revise national Disability Parking Scheme Minimum standards

ASAN AUNZ calls for the Australian Government, and other state and territory governments, to revise and exceed the minimum standards set by the National Disability Parking Permit Scheme.

Australia’s National Disability Parking Permit standards reflect the minimum requirements for disability parking permit schemes in Australia’s states and territories. Currently, the minimum criteria are to provide disability parking permits to people with severe restriction on their ability to walk or those diagnosed as legally blind.

These minimum standards do not reflect the definition of disability in Australia’s Disability Discrimination Act, resulting in many people with disability not being given the same opportunities as others in a similar situation because of their (type of) disability.
